It was with great pleasure that the Loves Jazz and Arts Center Hosted the exhibition “Lamentations and Celebration” By acclaimed Artist Stanley Bernard Hoyes. This exhibition was the culmination of a body of work produced by the artist called the Revival Series. It is the series by which Bernard Hoyes is most widely known and covers a body of work twenty years in the making. We are also thankful that The Loves Jazz & Arts Center is the museum where Bernard chose to retire the Revival Series of paintings. “It’s time to move on to another stage of my artistic career, the Revival Series of paintings have signified my creative expression for over two decades, now I will move on, there is so much more I want to say”.
The Revival Series celebrates his own experiences with Revivalism in Jamaica as a youth. Revivalism is an authentic Afro-Christian religious folk form that evolved during the eighteenth to nineteenth century. Revivalism is divided into two groups, Zion and Pocomania. Pocomania is more African in form while Zion is more Christian oriented.
About the Artist:
Bernard Stanley Hoyes
A native of Jamaica, Hoyes currently lives in Los Angeles. His career began at an early age. He began early, studying at the Institute of Jamaica Junior Art Center. At fifteen Hoyes moved to New York City to continue his academic and artistic endeavors. Classes at the Art Students league introduced him to the art scene in N.Y. He furthered his studies at Vermont Academy, in Vermont and later received a B.F.A from California College of Arts and Crafts in Oakland which set him on a path for recognition and rewards. During his early years, he worked intensively on his “The Rag Series” which symbolized, documented and prophesied his journey from a struggling artist to one of prominence. In the early 80’s he began creating works that recall his African Caribbean roots, specifically the rituals of African Spirituality and Christianity, since the middle passage. In this body of work, there is a heavy emphasis on the roles and power of women, especially in the realms of music and magic.
He has participated in numerous solo exhibitions here and abroad. He has created murals in the inner city of Los Angeles, CA. He has curated exhibitions and held a board membership at the Museum of African American Art in Los Angeles, CA. He has won awards of excellence for his famous “Revival Series,” nationally and internationally. His works have been featured in numerous Television and Film productions, and collected internationally. In 1997 he mounted a 25 year Review at the Museum of African American art and the Los Angeles Watts Towers Exhibition Center. He founded Caribbean Arts, Inc. in 1982 to publish and distribute his fine art prints. Still acting on the creative impulse, he has a sculpture garden in progress on a 2 1/2 acre mesa in Desert Hot Springs, CA. He has developed a non toxic etching using an Electrolyte process and has pulled a collection of Etchings since 1998. In the summer of 2006 he introduced Kensington Press Revival to the Arts community in Kingston, Jamaica. An Atelier for Printmaking, that shares Electrolyte Etching with local Artists. A selection of Hoyesís paintings was showcased in a solo celebration for Black history month at the Edward Dean Art Museum in Cherry Valley, CA. 2007.
