Loves School For The Arts

2009 LJAC Summer Youth Program

Photography Final Exhibition

Love’s Jazz & Arts Center, in partnership with Eastern Nebraska Community Action Partnership, (ENCAP ) has successfully completed our 3rd Summer Youth Camp.  Each year, LJAC brings expert artists to the Center to work with up to 25 youth participants in varying genres.  The goal is to teach young people the value of artistic expression, a viable, marketable skill, and the numerous career paths available to artists. In the process, they learn about their culture, history and contributions of African Americans.

As an educational institution, the Loves Jazz & Arts Center features state of the art digital media equipment enabling us to teach the latest media and engage in innovative new initiatives. Through exhibits, workshops, performances, educational programs, and special activities, the Loves Jazz & Arts Center explores the African American experience and celebrates accomplishments of the past and present to further advance the education of the future.

This year was no different. This summer, 19 young people worked with five instructors to learn videography Photography, Music Composition, Beginning Guitar and Piano to create a documentary completely done by then. We were told that it could not be done in a 6 - 8 weeks program. We sought to prove them wrong. In 7 weeks those 19 young adults learned how to use state of the art HD cameras, develop interview questions and styles, take professional photographs, storyboard, conduct interviews, create a music score and perform them, create poetic narrative, and edit video. The final product is "Generation O,NE," a documentary written, filmed and produced by 14-16 year olds.

This documentary will tell the story of what it’s like to be young living in North Omaha today.  This community has a rich history and culture.  They were able to learn and document some of that with interviews with long-time residents.  And, they were able to voice their opinions as well.  The process was a great learning experience for them as well as the Facilitators and Staff.  The obstacles and the environment that we find our young people coming of age in is not the ‘safe’ village of old.  The parents and grandparents raising our youth have provided them with such shelter—now barriers--  so that their world has become very small, very closed, and unnervingly limited.

We hope that simply exposing them to the equipment, instruments, software & skills associated with this project will expand their world, open up new horizons and reveal endless opportunities.

Congratulations to the 2009 Youth Artist Graduates
